before & after: embroidered-back chair

I’ve always been a fan of seeing embroidery on unconventional materials: porcelain, wood, metal, and so on. With a couple well-placed embroidered monogram letters, wood and craft workshop mentor Dana Israel has given this simple little chair infinitely more personality and sweetness. Wonderful job, Dana! ?Kate

Want to mow your lawn faster? The tractor you choose makes a difference

Want to finish mowing and trimming your big lawn in record time? We're not talking about racing lawn tractors and riding mowers here (though it does exist as a popular sport), just getting a big job done. While analyzing reviews for this year's report on lawn tractors, we found some models that not only zip across a lawn--and around trees, shrubs and other obstacles-- but also mow so close that they minimize trimming.

Apoc Neoshell Jacket from Westcomb

At the intersection of breath ability, waterproofing, and lightweight material lies the holy grail of outer wear. It's the quest for that fabric that brought us Gore-Tex and Triple Point Ceramic and any number of branded fabric names.

Now there's NeoShell by Polartec, a breathable waterproof fabric that claims to be "100% more breathable than the best waterproof breathable on the market in active conditions". Westcomb, a Canadian outerwear company is using NeoShell for their not yet on the market Apoc jacket, and at first blush, it looks to be good stuff. Here's a little more propaganda, directly from the NeoShell site:

Waterproof technology has remained about the same since the very first hard shell. Breathability is achieved through diffusion: moisture and heat create enough pressure that moisture vapor finally passes through the fabric.

Soft shells trade waterproofness for greater breathability by making use of convection: a constant exchange of air allows more moisture vapor to escape. Now, Polartec(R) NeoShell(R) delivers the best of both worlds.

I noticed the difference in weight right away -- the Apoc is absolutely a few ounces lighter than my Goretex shell, I could feel it. The fabric is slightly softer, slightly smoother, it's got a little bit more drape. The jacket folds up to very small; you can easily stuff it in your pack or suitcase.

There's just one thing missing from this very nice jacket. I prefer two way zippers, that way you can open the jacket from the bottom, too. That's all I've got for criticism -- I like everything else, the feel of the fabric, the cut of the jacket, the sharp acid green color. Don't want the green? You can get it in blue, gray, red, yellow, or black.

The rest of the Apoc jacket shows a really nice attention to detail. There are deep zippered pockets for your stuff. There's a bicep pocket for your lift ticket or lip balm. There's an inside pocket for your wallet and phone; it includes a pass-through for your headsets. All the seams are taped and lie flat. My favorite detail is that the collar is lined with a very light, fleecy material where it hits your face when it's zipped all the way up.

Pair this jacket with a lightweight down sweater or shirt, and you are set for almost any weather. It's not on retail racks yet, look for it as the the 2011 summer wanes.

Abandoned rocket factory haunts the Everglades

This creepy abandoned rocket factory once possessed aspirations to help send mankind into space using solid fuel rockets. Now, the graffiti splattered walls and crumbling facade tell the tale of stunted ambition. This documentary, called Space Miami, explores the story behind this abandoned rocket factory in the Florida Everglades known as Aerojet-Dade. Built in the early 1960's, the factory tested rockets in the deepest hole ever dug in Florida - a 150 foot deep cavern. The solid fuel rockets were too large to be transported overland, so a man-made canal to the Atlantic was carved to transport the rockets by barge. All of this effort proved needless when the Apollo space mission decided to go with liquid fuel instead of the solid fuel. The plant drifted into obsolescence overnight.

In 1969, the lights were turned off, never to be turned on again.

Vice TV produces Voodoo and Vaccines in Benin, Africa

Vice TV got our attention a year or so back because of their work producing the best destination and culture videos out in the community. These were the guys that were making guides to North Korea and covering Mongolian yak racing. These guys were the film makers and the story tellers that we aspired to.

Their work has paid off. Among numerous partnerships and work that they've got coming down the pipeline, you can now see many Vice videos over at CNN, and the group has cemented a place in the community as leaders in quality, edgy film making.

Vice's most recent production in collaboration with one.org looks at the challenges and rewards of working with vaccinations in Benin, Africa. It's a sobering look into the culture of West Africa, and the documentary is a great piece. Take a look at it below.

Spring Pasta

On cloudless, fog-less days, my kitchen door opens onto a sunny back patio. I get the occasional visitor - cats, bees, butterflies, big spiders. It's always a surprise. The last few days there have been four birds that stop by late in the morning to sit on branches near the kitchen window. They are tiny pom-poms with bodies no longer than my thumb. Sometimes they just sit and watch me, other times they peck at the window. This guy in particular is quite incessant.

Spring Pasta Recipe

He isn't at all scared of me, and I'm able to get quite close to the window to look at him. With my nose to the glass he's not more than an inch away. They stay for an hour or so, and then go on with their day elsewhere. I can't tell if they're baby birds, or just small. I bet one of you would know.

Spring Pasta Recipe

I really like having them around when I'm alone in the kitchen. They're funny and chirpy, and clearly friends or siblings. I was making this little pasta plate when they came by the other day. It's another leftover creation. I'm hooked on the Cipriani pastas - they're relatively pricey, but never disappoint. I had thin [cooked} egg noodles leftover from some Pasta al Limone I made the night before, and decided to throw this together. Noodles, whatever quick-cooking market vegetables were in the fridge, egg, and a bit of avocado. Worked out great. You might add some toasted nuts or breadcrumbs for crunch, or chopped olives, or a swirl of harissa, or lots of chopped herbs...similar to the quesadillas, there are a hundred ways to approach this. I can imagine a version made with soba noodles too.

Other news: Thank you all again for helping Super Natural Every Day debut at #6 on the New York Times Bestseller list. I'm very, very grateful for your support.

Fluorescent nanotubes used for imaging of internal organs

An enhanced color image of fluorescence from single-walled carbon nanotubes (right) shows ...

Mice are frequently used as lab models when testing new drugs, and fluorescent dyes are sometimes injected into their bodies so that researchers can better see how those drugs are progressing through their systems. Unfortunately, the pictures obtained in this process start to become murky when imaging anything more than a few millimeters beneath the skin. Scientists from Stanford University have now devised a system that utilizes fluorescent carbon nanotubes to produce clear color images of organs that are located centimeters within a mouse's body...
