Top five bars to get a (great) drink in Telluride, Colorado

telluride barsTo borrow a phrase, Telluride (and I mean this in the best possible way) is a little drinking town with a big ski problem. I've lived there off and on since 2005, and recently returned for a visit for the first time in two years.

Telluride--a former mining town--has never had a shortage of places to imbibe, but getting a well-made cocktail for under ten bucks is another story. Fortunately, there are a few old standbys as well as some new blood in town that hit just the right mix of ambiance, quality, and price.

Bonus: With just one exception, they're all frequented by locals, so you can escape the tourist scene and get a true taste of Telluride. Just don't wear a spanking new cowboy hat or boots, heels, or a starched button-down. This town is strictly casual, year round.

And a word of warning: You'll feel the effects of alcohol more at altitude (Telluride is at 8,725 feet). Go easy, drink tons of water, and remember that one drink has the cumulative effect of two at this height. Don't say you weren't warned.

1. La Marmotte
Located one block east of the gondola, unassumingly nestled against the base of the mountain, this adorable, cozy, convivial restaurant is a dying breed: the classic French Alpine restaurant. Actually, it's the historic Ice House, one of the oldest buildings in town, but inside, it's dark, romantic, and surprisingly lively.

For over 20 years, "The Marmot" has featured well-rendered French country classics such as Coq au Vin and French Onion Soup, along with more contemporary versions. The 3-course, $35 prix fixe is the best deal in town, but if it's just a drink you're looking for, you also can't go wrong. Take a seat on a stool at the tiny front bar, and have the friendly bartender (no ski town attitude here) pour you a glass off the thoughtful wine list, or whip you up a cocktail, such as the house-infused beet martini (trust me).

A hydration basic: Which water bottles are the best

Summer is here, and that means we'll all be spending a little more time out in the yard, at the beach or pretty much anywhere else in the hot sun. All this extra time outdoors means hydration is more important than usual. While some still turn to bottled water to cool down quickly and conveniently, more and more people are quenching their thirst with water they're toting in reusable bottles. Don't have a bottle? Luckily, we've found the best-reviewed reusable water bottles, and a few brands stand out.

Open Question: How to prop pillows while sleeping on an air bed?

So I am going camping soon and will be sleeping on an airbed which is fine except for I prefer to have my pillows slanted at-least a little when i sleep and the air mattress I will be sleeping on does not have a built in pillow. In the past my ideas usually ended up with my head slipping down and waking up with a somewhat stiff neck.. I prefer to do that as little as possible. I have a few no cost ideas of my own for this year that may work but I wanted to see if anyone else had any better ideas first. Thanks.

Meet Hawaii's greenest farmers market

Searching for local produce with a minimal eco-footprint? Look no further than the Hale'iwa Farmers' Market, which claims -- convincingly -- to be Hawaii's greenest.

Hale'iwa Town is located on Oahu's legendary North Shore, in the heart of the big-wave surf scene. Its market is open every Sunday from 9pm to 1am, and aims to be Hawaii's first totally green, zero-waste market.

I'm looking to go camping/vacationing in the Midwest area [Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, etc.] I was wondering if anyone would know of a nice place that would be quite cheap in pricing, that included a cabin/lodge/resort with bathrooms/bath? I have about 5 people going with me. I'm looking to stay for about a week or 4 nights...something of that sort.

Thanks :)

Bahrain plans major airport expansion

bahrainBahrain International Airport (BIA) will begin a new expansion program that is expected to increase the airport's capacity by 50 percent.

"The plans we are initiating for an expanded international airport are essential to Bahrain's continued development, not only in providing businesses in Bahrain with the access they demand for the future, but also in bolstering the growing aviation and logistics industry in the kingdom," said Khalid Al Rumaihi, Chairman of the Bahrain Airport Company.

The entire expansion program is expected to take four years and add 40,000 square meters, five new gates and forty check-in counters, boosting the airport capacity from 9 million to 13.5 million passengers, reported Arabian Business News. This project - which will help drive business investment and infrastructure development - follows recent investment in housing, water and education following the lifting of the State of National Safety by His Majesty King Hamad.

Seeing international airports expand is always a positive sign for travelers, as it means increased flight numbers and lower prices.

PossessedHand controls hand movement with electrical stimulation

The PossessedHand system uses non-invasive electrical stimulation of muscles in the forear...

It's often during those early stages of learning to play a new instrument that many people give up in despair. Even though you swear that you're hitting the right notes, everything still sounds like an old gramophone recording played at the wrong speed. If only you could let someone take control of your hands to fast forward through the arduous repetition phase before muscle memory kicks in and the piece you're trying to play begins to sound more like it should. That's precisely the kind of potential offered by the PossessedHand project. Electrode-packing armbands placed on a user's forearm send electrical pulses through the muscles to take control of the movement of the hand - with fledgling Koto players testing the system having demonstrated greater accuracy and speedier progress... Green Pea Soup

I held off writing about this until I was fairly confident it was a sure thing. And now that I'm sitting here amongst towers of boxes, I think it is safe to say...we're moving. Just up the street though! Nothing too dramatic. But yeah, it's a move. And let me tell you, I don't love moving. I've been happy to avoid doing it for seven? eight? years. But the prospect of a proper guest room, a bit more space to work, and extra, extra tall ceilings - all just a hop and skip from where we currently live (and love) - was too much to pass up. So, in addition to wrapping Champagne flutes one by one - and boxing up tights, toothbrushes, and tart pans - cleaning out the freezer was on my hit list. And that's where today's pea soup comes into play.

Pea Soup Recipe

I wish I could tell you I made today's pea soup with fresh spring peas. I didn't. It was made with peas found in the back left-hand corner of my freezer. And, even so, it was good. I'm sure it would be exponentially good with fresh market peas. Here's how it works. You make an Indian-inspired garlic ginger paste, then use it as the base of the soup along with some onion. There's also some green chiles in there to contribute some kick, along with a couple other spices. The ingredient list is based on one from this book, but I went off-road beyond that, and turned it into a one-pot soup.

Pea Soup Recipe

There are many things coming with me in the move. And many things that aren't :). I thought I'd share some pics of a few things I've come across that have made the cut. Up top, I love this antique cookie press that I purchased a while back at Heritage in Napa. And below that are some snapshots of my family, and my grandma's copy of The Joy of Cooking.

Pea Soup Recipe

And Heather, this is a note for you - those little spoons up above were Metne's. It's hard to see, but they all have M, for Metlar, on them. I think they must have been part of her wedding silver? I wonder if mom is hiding the rest of the M's somewhere? And then below those are some H's and a small menagerie of cookie cutters.

I'm looking forward to doing some shooting in the new apartment soon - the light there is stunning - although it will be the first time I'll be shooting from a place where I suspect the morning light will trump late afternoon. Fingers crossed.
