According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employees suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome missed an average of 28 days of work in 2007. Carpal tunnel syndrome is an injury to the wrist caused by a variety of actions including sewing, playing musical instruments and, most commonly, typing on computer keyboards. Part of the issue is the repetitive nature of these tasks, but incorrect posture and positioning can also contribute. Ergonomic injuries, including neck and back strain, accounted for 28 percent of all workplace injuries and illnesses that required time off from work in 2009, the BLS reports.
